Firefighters and other emergency services are responding to a water pipe break in the Hammersmith area of west London, causing major flooding, officials say. A number of people are trapped in cars and restaurants.

The incident began at approximately 9 p.m. on Friday when a water main burst in the W6 area near the Revenscourt Park tube station on Kings Street, according to a brief statement from Thames Water.

As a result, multiple streets in the area have been flooded and emergency services are at the scene. A number of people are trapped in vehicles, restaurants, and other venues in the area, according to witnesses.

Dozens of firefighters have responded to the scene, including a water rescue unit. There were no immediate reports of any injuries, but the Metropolitan Police Service has advised motorists to avoid the area until further notice.

"Engineers are on their way and will attempt to contain the leak and begin repairs. There is a police presence on site and we're aware of flooding in the area," Thames Water said in a statement. As a result of the incident, water supply has been disrupted across the area.

Thames Water said the disruption to the water supply is expected to last until at least 1 a.m. on Saturday. Postcodes affected include W4, W2, W11, W8, W9, W6, TW8, W3, W12, W14, W8, SW5, SW7, W10, HA9, NW10, NW6, NW8, NW1, W1H, W1U, W1A, W1B, WC1E,SW1A, SW1Y, W1C, W1F, W1J, W1S, WC2N, W1K, and SW13.
