Two airport vehicles have collided on a taxiway at London's Heathrow Airport, killing a man who was working for British Airways, local officials say. Passengers who were on a nearby plane were evacuated.

The incident happened at about 6:06 a.m. local time on Wednesday when officers were called to reports of a collision between two airport vehicles on a taxiway at Heathrow, which is Europe's busiest airport.

The Metropolitan Police Service, which is also known as Scotland Yard, said a man in his 40s was taken to a London hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. A second person, who was only described as a male, suffered a broken shoulder and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The victim who died was identified as an engineer for British Airways. "We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and are offering our full care and support to his family and colleagues," the airline said in a statement. His family has been notified.

As a result of the accident, passengers on a plane nearby were evacuated and several flights from Terminal 5 were delayed, but the airport remained open.

Details about the cause of Wednesday's accident were not immediately known. Officers from Scotland Yard's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating what happened, as are investigators from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
