              A meeting between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif is underway in Vienna to continue negotiations in an attempt to reach a nuclear accord by July 7. A senior U.S. State Department official, providing an update on condition of anonymity, said the meeting began at 6:02 p.m. local time. Earlier today, Kerry met with UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

 2 yrs | Up to 97 people killed in Boko Haram attack on villages in northeastern Nigeria - reports

              As many as 97 people have been killed after Boko Haram militants attacked two villages in the Monguno local government area of Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, according to news reports. Witnesses told the local Daily Post newspaper that the militants ordered all the men in the villages to group together, after which the militants opened fire, killing at least 48 people and injuring others. The AFP news agency, citing witnesses, reported that at least 97 people had been killed.

 2 yrs | Gunmen ambush UN convoy in northern Mali, killing 6 peacekeepers

              Six United Nations (UN) peacekeepers have been killed after their convoy was ambushed by armed men in northern Mali, says Radhia Achour, a spokesperson for the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). The attack happened at around 9 a.m. about 45 kilometers (28 miles) southwest of Timbuktu. Five peacekeepers were also injured in the attack and two MINUSMA vehicles were destroyed.

              The number of Britons confirmed to have been killed in last week's attack on a beach resort in Tunisia has risen to 30. "We now have all 30 British victims positively identified and we can say with a high degree of confidence that is now the final death toll of British nationals killed in this incident," UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said.  2 yrs | Death toll from Philippine ferry capsizing rises to 38, number of missing revised up

              The number of dead after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Leyte in the central Philippines has risen to at least 38 after two more bodies were recovered, the Red Cross reports. Meanwhile, the number of people unaccounted-for was increased from 20 to 33 after an engineer reported that the ship was carrying 173 passengers and 16 crew members.

              At least 36 people are confirmed to have died after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Leyte in the central Philippines, the Philippine Red Cross reports. The MV Nirvana Pump Boat was carrying 174 passengers when it overturned during heavy rain and strong winds near the port of Ormoc. A total of 36 bodies had been recovered by 6:30 p.m. local time, while 20 people remained unaccounted-for. 118 people have been rescued. [Red Cross statement to follow]

              Police in the New Zealand region of Canterbury are investigating the deaths of a woman and three children at a residence in Tinwald. Investigators have not commented on how the victims died. A team of 30 including investigators and forensic staff are working at the scene. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
