 2 yrs | Tsunami advisory issued for California

              The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory for California. Tsunami waves that may exceed 1 feet above normal sea levels are expected to produce strong currents or waves that are dangerous to persons in or near the water. These currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures, the center cautions. The advisory is in effect from San Onofre State Beach, which is southeast of Los Angeles, to Ragged Point, which is northwest of San Luis.

 2 yrs | Valley Fire grows to 70,000 acres with 30% containment

              The Valley Fire in Northern California has grown to 70,000 acres with 30 percent containment. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in an update on early Wednesday that now nearly 2,800 firefighters are battling the blaze, which has destroyed at least 585 homes, in addition to hundreds of structures that have not yet been assessed. The Butte Fire, southeast of Sacramento, has grown to 71,780 acres and is at 45 percent containment. At least 233 homes have been destroyed by the Butte Fire.

 2 yrs | Valley Fire in California grows to 67,000 acres overnight

              The Valley Fire in Northern California grew to 67,000 acres (27,113 hectares) overnight with only 15 percent containment, CAL FIRE reports, up from 61,000 acres on Monday afternoon. The fire, which started in Lake County on Saturday afternoon and has since spread to neighboring countries, has destroyed at least 585 homes. Hundreds of other structures are also known to have been destroyed but have not yet been assessed. (more)

 2 yrs | 1 Marine dead, 18 others injured in vehicle rollover accident at Camp Pendleton in California

              A U.S. Marine was killed and 18 others were injured in a vehicle rollover accident at Camp Pendleton on Thursday, local San Diego affiliate KNSD-TV reports. The name of the deceased Marine has not been released, pending notification to family members. The extent of injuries is not immediately known. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
