              Former King Michael I of Romania, the country's last monarch and one of the last-surviving leaders from World War II, has died in Switzerland after a lengthy illness, the royal house says. He was 96 years old. (more)

              The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2016 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry to three European molecular scientists who developed the world's smallest machines. The prize went to Jean-Pierre Sauvage of the University of Strasbourg in France; Sir James Fraser Stoddart of Northwestern University in the United States; and Bernard L Feringa of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands for the "design and synthesis of molecular machines."

 1 yr | Sharapova doping ban reduced to 15 months

              On Tuesday former world number one tennis player Maria Sharapova's had her two-year doping ban reduced by nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Switzerland-based CAS said in a statement, an arbitration panel quote "found that Ms Sharapova committed an anti-doping rule violation and that while it was with 'no significant fault', she bore some degree of fault, for which a sanction of fifteen months is appropriate," end quote. The ban took effect from Jan. 26, 2016. Following a positive test for the banned drug meldonium during January's Australian Open, five-times grand slam winner Sharapova was banned by the International Tennis Federation in June.

              Six people have been injured after a knifeman attacked passengers and ignited a flammable liquid on board a passenger train in northeast Switzerland, not far from the border with Liechtenstein. The attacker was also injured. (more)
