              Google launched an aggressive challenge to consumer electronics giants like Apple and Samsung on Tuesday, introducing a new line of smartphones called Pixel and other gadgets designed to showcase a digital helper the company calls "Google Assistant." The new devices represent a big push by Google to make and sell its own hardware, instead of largely just supplying software for other manufacturers.

              Google is creating a parent firm called Alphabet as part of a restructuring to make the Internet services giant "cleaner and more accountable," says CEO Larry Page. Alphabet, Inc. will replace Google, Inc. as the publicly-traded entity and all shares of Google will automatically convert into the same number of shares of Alphabet. Page said he will serve as chief executive of Alphabet, with Sergey Brin serving as the parent company's president. Sundar Pichai, meanwhile, has been appointed to become CEO of Google, Inc., replacing Page. [full statement attached]
