              A North Korean soldier came under fire Monday as he raced towards the demilitarized zone and ran across the border to defect to the South, military officials said on Tuesday. The man was seriously injured.

              North Korea says its expression of "regret" over last month's mine explosion that seriously injured two South Korean soldiers was not an apology, accusing the South of interpreting the meaning of the word to its own advantage. The North's National Defense Committee issued a statement Wednesday, calling on South Korea to avoid any remarks that could "dampen" inter-Korean relations and return the peninsula to confrontation, the South's Yonhap news agency reported. The word "regret" was part of an agreement reached on August 24 to end tensions on the Korean peninsula, and it was widely interpreted as an apology, which had been demanded by the South.
