Supreme Court voids Alabama ruling against lesbian adoption


          The Supreme Court ruled Monday that Alabama's top court went too far when it tried to overturn a lesbian mother's adoption of her partner's children. In the dispute between the two women whose long-term relationship ended bitterly, one partner bore three children; the other formally adopted them in Georgia.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” author, Nelle Harper Lee, dead at the age of 89


          Pulitzer Prize winning author, Nelle Harper Lee, known for the 1961 fiction classic “To Kill a Mockingbird” has died at the age of 89, according to an official with the Monroeville, Alabama mayor's office. (more)

Alabama State Sen. Cam Ward, R-Alabaster, arrested, charged with driving under the influence - WAFF48


          Alabama State Senator Cam Ward was booked into jail Wednesday on a driving under the influence charge, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. A bond amount was not immediately known. Ward, a longtime Republican senator from Alabaster, is known for his fight to reform Alabama's overcrowded prison system. On Tuesday, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley named the senator to the prison reform council.
