{"id":50710,"date":"2025-01-31T01:17:08","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T06:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/?p=50710"},"modified":"2025-01-31T01:17:08","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T06:17:08","slug":"fda-approves-first-in-class-non-opioid-painkiller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/fda-approves-first-in-class-non-opioid-painkiller\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA approves &#8216;first-in-class&#8217; non-opioid painkiller"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a non-opioid analgesic for the treatment of acute pain in adults, as part of an effort to encourage the development of non-opioid pain treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-novel-non-opioid-treatment-moderate-severe-acute-pain\">announced<\/a> on Thursday the approval of Journavx (suzetrigine) 50-milligram oral tablets from pharmaceutical company Vertex, describing it as a &#8220;first-in-class non-opioid analgesic&#8221; for moderate to severe acute pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journavx reduces pain by targeting a pain-signaling pathway involving sodium channels in the peripheral nervous system before pain signals reach the brain, the FDA said. This contrasts with opioids, which manage pain by binding to brain receptors that receive nerve signals from different parts of the body, but also have addictive effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA has issued draft guidance aimed at encouraging the development of non-opioid analgesics for acute pain while working to reduce the clinical practice of prescribing opioids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s approval is an important public health milestone in acute pain management,\u201d said FDA Director Dr. Jacqueline Corrigan-Curay. &#8220;This action and the agency\u2019s designations to expedite the drug\u2019s development and review underscore FDA\u2019s commitment to approving safe and effective alternatives to opioids for pain management.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common side effects of Journavx in study participants included itching, muscle spasms, elevated blood levels of creatine phosphokinase, and rash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journavx will cost $15.50 per pill, making it significantly more expensive than comparable opioids, which are often available as generics for less than $1, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nonopioid-painkiller-fda-vertex-pharmaceuticals-b1dd4276fce3d88ff32e3062e95f408f\">according<\/a> to the Associated Press. Although the drug proved more effective than a placebo in clinical studies, it did not surpass the effectiveness of a commonly used opioid-acetaminophen combination pill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a slam dunk on effectiveness,\u201d Michael J. Schuh of Mayo Clinic Florida told AP. \u201cBut it is a slam dunk in that it\u2019s a very different pathway and mechanism of action.
