McFadden, a Trump appointee, affirms that the administration cannot deny access to journalists based on the content of their reporting. \u201cIf the Government opens its doors to some journalists\u2026it cannot then shut those doors to other journalists because of their viewpoints,\u201d McFadden said. He gave the government one week to respond or appeal before the order takes effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling stems from a February <a href=\"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/ap-denied-access-to-white-house-event-for-refusing-to-rename-gulf-of-mexico\/\">incident<\/a> in which the AP was barred from attending an Oval Office event after declining to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the \u201cGulf of America,\u201d following an executive order signed by Trump. The AP said it was warned that access to future presidential events would be conditioned on compliance with the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its lawsuit, the AP argued that the exclusion amounted to retaliation for refusing to align its editorial standards with the president\u2019s political agenda. The AP, which maintains one of the world\u2019s most influential style guides, said it would continue to use \u201cGulf of Mexico,\u201d which has been recognized for centuries, while acknowledging Trump\u2019s attempt to rename it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor anyone who thinks The Associated Press\u2019 lawsuit against President Trump\u2019s White House is about the name of a body of water, think bigger,\u201d AP Executive Editor Julie Pace wrote in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. \u201cIt\u2019s really about whether the government can control what you say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reporting from the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-ap-media-court-white-house-events-access-f346a0efe87c1dec4d6f90e6041abd09\">Associated Press<\/a>, the White House has not yet confirmed whether it will immediately comply with the judge\u2019s ruling. In the meantime, the administration has continued to restrict the AP\u2019s ability to attend select events in the Oval Office and East Room and to travel aboard Air Force One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a court hearing in late March, the president\u2019s legal team argued that the administration has discretion over which reporters attend smaller events, saying it reflects evolving media consumption habits. They noted that the AP continues to have access to daily press briefings and livestreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the agency said it had suffered delays in delivering words and images, and even lost a $150,000 advertising contract as a result of diminished access.
