The IRS is expected to issue a decision soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ivy League institution has already been hit with a freeze on $2.2 billion in federal grants and $60 million in contract value. The funding suspension was announced on Monday after Harvard rejected policy demands outlined by a federal task force convened by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2025\/04\/harvard-wont-comply-with-demands-from-trump-administration\/\">letter<\/a> to the Harvard community on Monday, University President Alan M. Garber condemned the administration\u2019s actions, describing them as an \u201cunprecedented\u201d effort to control the intellectual conditions of a private university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough some of the demands outlined by the government are aimed at combating antisemitism, the majority represent direct governmental regulation of the \u2018intellectual conditions\u2019 at Harvard,\u201d Garber wrote. \u201cThey include requirements to \u2018audit\u2019 the viewpoints of our student body, faculty, staff, and to \u2018reduce the power\u2019 of certain students, faculty, and administrators targeted because of their ideological views.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garber said Harvard has informed the administration, through legal counsel, that it will not accept the proposed agreement, citing the school\u2019s First Amendment protections and institutional independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo government\u2014regardless of which party is in power\u2014should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garber also defended the university\u2019s record on addressing antisemitism, saying Harvard had taken \u201cmany steps\u201d in the past fifteen months and planned to do more. However, he argued that compliance with the administration\u2019s broader demands would compromise the university\u2019s ability to uphold academic freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump accused Harvard of ideological bias and administrative incompetence in a social media <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114347313852363347\">post<\/a> on Wednesday. He criticized the school\u2019s decision to hire former mayors Bill de Blasio and Lori Lightfoot, describing them as \u201ctwo of the worst and most incompetent mayors in the history of our Country,\u201d and accused Harvard of becoming a center for \u201chate and stupidity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump also referenced the controversy surrounding former Harvard President Claudine Gay, who resigned amid allegations of plagiarism.
