A suspect was shot by a police officer at a Walmart in North Charleston, South Carolina, after allegedly brandishing a firearm during a foot chase, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Monday at the Walmart located at 7400 Rivers Avenue. Police said an off-duty officer working security at the store was alerted by staff about a customer suspected of attempting a fraudulent return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the officer spoke with employees, the individual became aware of the situation and attempted to flee through an emergency exit, police said. During the pursuit, the suspect reportedly pulled a firearm on the officer, who then discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officers on scene provided medical aid, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of the suspect\u2019s injuries was not immediately known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating the shooting. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier on Monday night, the North Charleston Police Department posted on social media that officers were responding to an \u201cactive incident\u201d at the store and advised the public to avoid the area. The Charleston County Sheriff\u2019s Office also assisted by establishing a perimeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Footage from the scene showed a significant police presence, including a helicopter overhead and a Mobile Command Center parked outside the Walmart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
