The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accident happened on Wednesday when the funicular, a century-old tram that connects historic districts in Lisbon, went off the tracks and collided with a building, authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emergency officials said at least 15 people were killed and 23 others injured. Five of the injured are in serious condition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the injured was a three-year-old boy, whose condition is not life-threatening, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnportugal.iol.pt\/geral\/elevador-da-gloria-em-lisboa-descarrilou\/20250903\/68b8785fd34ef72ee44a1f76\">CNN Portugal<\/a>. Authorities have not released the nationalities of those killed or injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Witness Teresa d\u2019Av\u00f3 told <a href=\"https:\/\/sicnoticias.pt\/pais\/2025-09-03-elevador-da-gloria-em-lisboa-descarrilou-d806360d\">SIC Not\u00edcias<\/a> she saw the funicular \u201cout of control\u201d before it \u201ccrashed with brutal force into a building and came apart.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt crashed with enormous force, it was something shocking,&#8221; d\u2019Av\u00f3 said. &#8220;It had no brakes at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preliminary reports suggest the cable may have snapped, though this has not been officially confirmed. Authorities said an investigation will determine the cause of the derailment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, the Portuguese government expressed \u201cdeep sorrow\u201d over the accident. It said emergency, civil protection, police, and transport authorities responded immediately and will continue to provide support. A national day of mourning has also been declared for Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gl\u00f3ria funicular, which has linked Lisbon\u2019s Restauradores Square with the Bairro Alto district since 1885, is one of the city\u2019s most iconic modes of transport and a popular tourist attraction.
