The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal have formally recognized the State of Palestine, joining almost 150 countries in supporting Palestinian statehood. Israel condemned the move, describing it as a reward for terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said<\/a> recognition was intended to \u201ckeep alive the possibility of peace and a two-state solution,\u201d describing Hamas as a \u201cbrutal terror organization\u201d with no future role in government or security. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the moment, we have neither a safe and secure Israel nor a viable Palestinian state,\u201d Starmer said, while also criticizing Israel\u2019s bombardment of Gaza as \u201cutterly intolerable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said<\/a> the decision comes following Canada\u2019s decades-long support for a two-state solution, stating that Hamas has \u201crobbed the Palestinian people\u201d while the current Israeli government has blocked the creation of a Palestinian state. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carney said that recognition \u201cdoes not legitimize or condone terrorism\u201d but provides \u201cadditional tools to those who seek peaceful coexistence and the end of Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia\u2019s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong issued a joint statement<\/a> saying the recognition aligns with \u201cthe legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine\u201d and is part of an international effort to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and secure the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portugal\u2019s foreign minister also confirmed<\/a> recognition, saying a two-state solution is \u201cthe only path to a just and lasting peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry welcomed the announcements, calling them \u201cbrave decisions\u201d consistent with international law and a step toward protecting the two-state solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel condemned the announcements, with the Foreign Ministry saying it \u201cdoes not promote peace, but on the contrary\u2014further destabilizes the region.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that \u201ca Palestinian state will not be established,\u201d accusing foreign leaders of granting \u201can enormous prize to terror.\u201d He said Israel would respond after his return from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France is expected to announce its own recognition of Palestinian statehood at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, with other European nations such as Belgium, Luxembourg, and Malta also preparing similar declarations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
