French authorities are searching for a group of thieves who carried out a high-profile burglary at the Louvre Museum in Paris, stealing several royal jewels of \u201cinestimable heritage value,\u201d according to the Ministry of Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theft occurred on Sunday inside the museum\u2019s Galerie d\u2019Apollon, which houses France\u2019s royal gem collection and the Crown Diamonds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a ministry statement, two high-security display cases were targeted and eight historic pieces were stolen, including a diamond diadem belonging to Queen Marie-Am\u00e9lie and Queen Hortense, emerald jewelry from Empress Marie-Louise, and a brooch of Empress Eug\u00e9nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The museum\u2019s alarm system was triggered when the thieves broke through an exterior window and smashed the display cases. The Ministry of Culture said the burglars acted \u201cparticularly quickly and violently.\u201d No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez said that \u201cthree or four\u201d suspects were involved and fled on high-powered scooters. \u201cClearly, this is a team that carried out reconnaissance, was very experienced, and acted very, very quickly,\u201d he said, adding that all central police brigades in Paris have been mobilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surveillance footage reviewed by BFMTV<\/a> shows a masked individual in a yellow vest sawing through a window while visitors were still inside the gallery. A source told BFMTV that Empress Eug\u00e9nie\u2019s crown, one of the stolen items, was later recovered in a damaged state but not destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the investigation is being handled by the anti-banditry brigade under the authority of the Paris prosecutor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Emmanuel Macron condemned<\/a> the burglary as \u201can attack on a heritage we cherish because it is our history.\u201d He said all efforts were underway \u201cto recover the works and bring the perpetrators to justice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez and Culture Minister Rachida Dati visited the museum on Sunday, describing the theft as \u201can attack on our history and our heritage.\u201d Nu\u00f1ez said<\/a>, \u201cEverything is being done to apprehend the perpetrators as quickly as possible. The mobilization of investigators will be total.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Culture said a criminal investigation has been opened for organized theft and conspiracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Louvre has faced thefts in the past, most famously in 1911 when Leonardo da Vinci\u2019s Mona Lisa was stolen by an Italian employee of the museum. The painting was recovered two years later in Florence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
