{"id":60566,"date":"2025-10-24T17:27:36","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T21:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/?p=60566"},"modified":"2025-10-24T17:27:36","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T21:27:36","slug":"tropical-storm-melissa-could-strengthen-into-category-5-hurricane-near-jamaica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/tropical-storm-melissa-could-strengthen-into-category-5-hurricane-near-jamaica\/","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Melissa could strengthen into Category 5 hurricane near Jamaica"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Tropical Storm Melissa is forecast to rapidly intensify as it moves through the Caribbean Sea and could reach Category 5 strength when it nears Jamaica early next week, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its latest advisory issued Friday afternoon, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/refresh\/graphics_at3+shtml\/242044.shtml?cone#contents\">NHC said<\/a> Melissa had strengthened to near-hurricane force as it drifted north through the Caribbean Sea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forecasters said the storm is expected to undergo rapid intensification over the weekend as it moves across very warm waters and encounters lighter wind shear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hurricane center now predicts Melissa will reach peak sustained winds of around 155 mph within 60 hours, the threshold for a Category 5 hurricane, noting there is \u201ca distinct possibility that Melissa could become a Category 5 hurricane during this time period.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency cited the storm\u2019s improved structure and favorable atmospheric conditions as key factors behind the sharp increase in intensity guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melissa could approach Jamaica by early next week, bringing life-threatening winds, flash flooding, landslides, and a dangerous storm surge.
