President Donald Trump suggested the United States could take military action in Nigeria to stop the killing of Christians, a day after warning that his administration may cut aid and \u201cgo in guns-a-blazing\u201d against what he called Islamic terrorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump made the remarks on Sunday while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One when asked if he envisioned U.S. troops on the ground or air strikes in Nigeria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCould be, I mean I envisage a lot of things,\u201d he said<\/a>. \u201cThey are killing record number of Christians in Nigeria, and they have other countries very bad also, you know, that part of the world, very bad.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They are killing the Christians, and killing them in very large numbers,” Trump said. “We are not going to allow that to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comments followed a post<\/a> on Saturday in which Trump warned that if the Nigerian government \u201ccontinues to allow the killing of Christians,\u201d the United States would \u201cimmediately stop all aid and assistance\u201d and could intervene militarily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet,\u201d he wrote, instructing the Department of War to \u201cprepare for possible action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria\u2019s government responded<\/a> through Dr. Daniel Bwala, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu, who said Trump\u2019s comments had been misunderstood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is no genocide taking place in Nigeria; rather, the nation faces serious security challenges that have affected people across all faiths, including Christians,\u201d Bwala told BBC World Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bwala said that while Nigeria welcomes cooperation with international partners, any action must respect its sovereignty. \u201cIt would not be diplomatically appropriate for the United States to take unilateral action without engagement and consent from the Nigerian government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bwala added that during Trump\u2019s first administration, U.S. policy had supported Nigeria\u2019s fight against insurgents. \u201cHis executive action facilitated the sale of arms to Nigeria to strengthen our fight against insurgency,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
