Several Democratic lawmakers accused President Trump of promoting political violence after he labeled them \u201cseditious\u201d and suggested they should face the death penalty in response to a video urging military and intelligence personnel to refuse unlawful orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The video<\/a>, posted on Tuesday, features six Democratic members of Congress addressing service members and intelligence staff. The video was posted by Sen. Elissa Slotkin and featured Slotkin, Sen. Mark Kelly, Rep. Chris Deluzio, Rep. Maggie Goodlander, Rep. Chrissy Houlahan, and Rep. Jason Crow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All six lawmakers cited their military or intelligence backgrounds before addressing those currently serving in the armed forces and intelligence community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawmakers said stress within the national security community was increasing and urged personnel to follow only lawful orders, stating, \u201cYou can refuse illegal orders. You must refuse illegal orders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump responded by writing: \u201cIt\u2019s called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand \u2013 We won\u2019t have a Country anymore!!! An example MUST BE SET.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also reposted a message reading, \u201cHANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD!!\u201d and later wrote<\/a>: \u201cSEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The democratic lawmakers issued a joint statement<\/a> in response to Trump’s comments. \u201cNo threat, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation,\u201d they said. \u201cEvery American must unite and condemn the President\u2019s calls for our murder and political violence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur servicemembers should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the Constitution and obligation to follow only lawful orders,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked at a briefing whether Trump was calling for the execution of members of Congress, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said \u201cno.\u201d She instead criticized the Democrats for encouraging military personnel to defy the chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several Republican senators declined to comment when asked about Trump\u2019s remarks. Sen. Lindsey Graham said he \u201chated\u201d the Democrats\u2019 video but described Trump\u2019s response as \u201cover the top,\u201d according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
