He also admitted taking part in the 2024 kidnapping of Ismael \u201cEl Mayo\u201d Zambada, who was later brought into U.S. custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milenio.com\/policia\/narcotrafico\/joaquin-guzman-lopez-se-declara-culpable-de-trafico-de-droga-en-eu\">Milenio<\/a>, prosecutors confirmed during the hearing that Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez is cooperating as a witness for U.S. authorities and is expected to seek a reduced sentence, which could otherwise keep him in prison for the rest of his life; he is scheduled to return to court on June 1, 2026, for a status hearing before sentencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez is the latest of El Chapo\u2019s sons to face U.S. charges. His brother Ovidio Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez pleaded guilty in July to four federal counts involving drug trafficking, money laundering, and firearms, admitting his role as a leader of the Sinaloa Cartel. Two other brothers, Iv\u00e1n Archivaldo Guzm\u00e1n Salazar and Jes\u00fas Alfredo Guzm\u00e1n Salazar, remain wanted by U.S. authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The developments come months after Ismael &#8220;El Mayo&#8221; Zambada Garc\u00eda, the 75-year-old co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel alongside Joaqu\u00edn \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzm\u00e1n, also pleaded guilty in U.S. federal court to leading one of the world\u2019s largest drug trafficking organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July 2024, Zambada was captured near El Paso, Texas, after being lured into U.S. custody by Joaqu\u00edn Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez, according to federal prosecutors.
