President Trump said he has withdrawn an invitation for Canada to join his proposed \u201cBoard of Peace,\u201d after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada \u201cdoesn’t live because of the United States,\u201d following comments Trump made at Davos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada\u2019s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time,” Trump said in a post<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carney had made the remarks earlier Thursday during a speech in Canada, which preceded Trump\u2019s decision to withdraw the invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCanada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in the economy, in security and in rich cultural exchange,\u201d Carney said. \u201cBut Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exchange follows Carney\u2019s recent appearance at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. According to ACB News<\/a>, Carney said during his Davos remarks that Canada could demonstrate that the future \u201cdoesn\u2019t have to be autocratic,\u201d and criticized coercion by powerful countries against smaller ones without naming Trump directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Carney’s remarks, Trump said that \u201cCanada lives because of the United States,\u201d adding that Canada receives many \u201cfreebies\u201d from Washington and \u201cshould be grateful.\u201d Trump said Carney\u2019s Davos speech showed he \u201cwasn\u2019t so grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s proposed Board of Peace has been described by the president as a new international leadership body initially focused on Gaza. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has said<\/a> the board is not intended to replace the United Nations, though he has criticized the UN\u2019s effectiveness and said it has failed to resolve conflicts he believes it should have addressed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
