Smart technologies embedded into these vehicles had the potential to avoid accidents and steer clear of danger. In fact, early testing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hIZWjOaS33M\">especially among Tesla vehicles<\/a>, revealed how adept many of these systems were at predicting accidents before they happened. Unfortunately, though, the framing of electric vehicles as the future of safer and smarter transportation is ultimately wrong. Even though electric vehicle adoption is accelerating, traffic deaths remain roughly the same as they were, raising the uncomfortable question of whether these new vehicles are actually making any difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety and promise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten years ago, the promise that electric vehicles would be much safer seemed so realistic. Companies were right at the beginning of an emerging technology, and it seemed almost miraculous that these cars were finally on the road after decades in development. The thought was that newer cars would lead to safer roads, but as any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gammill.law\/torrance-personal-injury-attorney\/\">top personal injury lawyer<\/a>, that&#8217;s not the case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou&#8217;re still seeing a lot of personal injuries in the space course by electric vehicles,\u201dexplains Gammill Law. \u201cWhile these vehicles tend to have advanced systems on them, they can&#8217;t always predict the outcomes of specific situations on the road that they haven&#8217;t seen before. They&#8217;re unable to really deploy common sense and experience like people can, even if their underlying architecture is more reliable and more likely to concentrate on the road in front of them. What we seem to be dealing with here is a very different type of intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Weight and speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there is the physical metrics associated with electric vehicles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They tend to be significantly heavier than conventional internal combustion engine cars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While they might have fewer parts, the sheer weight of the batteries that they carry is enormous.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These easily put most vehicles over 2.5 to 3 tons, and even small electric vehicles are very heavy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, this means that braking systems need to be much beefier, and most electric vehicles have longer stopping distances. The weight of the battery means that they have more kinetic force when they&#8217;re moving forwards which needs to be taken out of the vehicle in the form of heat. Braking systems are very good, but like-for-like, they&#8217;re not as good as internal combustion engine cars, which means that electric vehicles can&#8217;t react as quickly to situations on the road. At the same time, they are much faster. Electric vehicles have rapid acceleration which is difficult for inexperienced drivers to master. They have quiet&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>motors but extremely fast ability to increase in speed which is leading to more pedestrian injuries and deaths.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, lawyers like Gammill Law are seeing this in their practices. They&#8217;re noting that electric vehicles lead to more unexpected types of injuries on the road that wouldn&#8217;t ordinarily occur with internal combustion engine vehicles.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe performance of many mid-range electric vehicles is the same as supercars from 20 years ago in terms of acceleration. The downside is that they have additional weight and they don&#8217;t corner as well despite their low centre of gravity. This means that drivers are often caught unaware and don&#8217;t know the sheer capabilities of their vehicles, leading to a higher risk of accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology as a distraction<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1018\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025EVCar.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63956\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025EVCar.jpg 1018w, https:\/\/bnonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025EVCar-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bnonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2025EVCar-768x482.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1018px) 100vw, 1018px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: smart-me AG<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Many of these vehicles don&#8217;t produce smarter driving among drivers. In fact, they can encourage human beings to take their eyes off the road and focus elsewhere. When this happens, that&#8217;s when the real danger begins. In these situations, it&#8217;s not clear who is entirely responsible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers ask drivers who keep their hands on the wheel and pay attention to the road even when they&#8217;re using driver assistance features. These systems are reliable, but they still require human oversight and will alert drivers when they require them to retake control.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers, though, are sometimes unwilling to do this. You can see why if you paid for an autopilot service, you wanted it to work. That&#8217;s why strange and unusual types of injuries are more common among electric vehicle accidents compared to conventional cars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Policy issues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, of course, there are policy issues that don&#8217;t always deal with these dangers, which may be why many people haven&#8217;t heard of them. For example, transportation policy is currently obsessed with emissions per mile. This is lower for electric vehicles obviously, but it ignores some of the other issues that policy makers were previously attentive to. For example, there isn\u2019t data on deaths per mile, which is another important metric that people care about.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Policymakers aren\u2019t discussing how road design and speed limits need to be changed to account for electric vehicle developments, either. How are law enforcement officials going to manage a new road situation where most people are driving extremely powerful cars? This conversation simply isn&#8217;t happening right now because policy makers are more concerned about ensuring more people drive electric cars before net zero targets are reached in the 2040s and 2050s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can reduce road deaths?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This ultimately begs the question of what can reduce road deaths? Currently, the best evidence-based solutions are things like narrow roads and protected bike lanes. These might seem counterintuitive but they change driver behavior considerably. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomtom.com\/newsroom\/explainers-and-insights\/effects-of-lower-speed-limits-across-cities\/\">Lower urban speed limits<\/a> are one option that&#8217;s being explored by policymakers, but these are very unpopular because drivers feel like they are driving artificially slowly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fewer cars overall is another method that might be used in the future. This could really become popular if driverless ride-sharing becomes a service, then most people won&#8217;t require cars of their own and can simply use cars that are available. Plus, if AI has been mastered by that stage, it will mean that the experience is much <a href=\"https:\/\/bnonews.com\/index.php\/2026\/01\/at-least-21-killed-nearly-250-injured-after-trains-collide-in-spain\/\">safer<\/a>. AI should be at least ten times safer than human drivers, especially when it comes to protecting pedestrians from accidents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, even if electrification addresses climate risks, the kinetic risks of electric vehicles need to still be managed.
