A man was shot by Secret Service agents after he pulled out a gun and fired toward officers near the White House in Washington, D.C., shortly after the vice president\u2019s motorcade passed through the area, according to officials. A juvenile bystander was struck by gunfire from the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday near 15th Street and Independence Avenue SW, close to the Washington Monument and just south of the White House complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn said plainclothes officers and agents who regularly patrol the outer perimeter of the White House complex identified a suspicious adult male who appeared to have a firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey called in support from our marked uniformed Secret Service police to make contact with that individual,\u201d Quinn said. \u201cUpon making contact, that individual fled briefly on foot, withdrew a firearm and fired in the direction of our agents and officers. They returned fire and engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect was hit and taken to a hospital. Quinn said he had no updates on the suspect\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe believe only one bystander was hit by the suspect,\u201d Quinn said. \u201cThat individual is a juvenile, did not sustain life-threatening injuries, but he is also receiving treatment at the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Quinn said Vice President JD Vance\u2019s motorcade had passed through the area not long before the shooting. Officials did not say whether the suspect was connected to the motorcade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhether or not it was directed at the president, I don\u2019t know, but we will find out,\u201d Quinn added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident led the White House to be briefly placed on lockdown after reports of gunfire near the complex. The Metropolitan Police Department said the scene was secured and roads in the area would remain closed for several hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
