Pix went from zero to nearly 30% of Brazilian e-commerce in three years. Today it accounts for 42%, has overtaken credit cards, and is used by 93% of the adult population. There were 68.7 billion transactions in 2024, a 52% increase over the prior year. It’s the fastest-growing instant payment system in the world, faster even than India’s UPI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When other countries in the region look at those numbers, the instinct is to replicate. Colombia launched Bre-B in October 2025. Mexico is trying to get DiMo off the ground after CoDi failed to gain traction. Argentina is betting on QR interoperability through Transferencias 3.0. But none of these systems are anywhere close to reproducing Pix’s trajectory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I operate LaFinteca<\/a> across seven Latin American countries, and what I’ve learned is that Pix worked because of a set of regulatory decisions the Central Bank of Brazil made simultaneously. It mandated participation for all regulated financial institutions, set zero cost for individuals from day one, and centralized the system’s entire infrastructure and governance. No other regulator in the region did all three at the same time. The network effect was immediate: Pix didn’t need to convince any bank to join, because joining was mandatory. And consumers didn’t need any incentive beyond the obvious one, which was paying for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico illustrates the difficulty well. SPEI is a solid interbank rail used by 60% of the population. But when they tried to build a QR payment layer on top of it with CoDi, adoption stalled at 8%. DiMo, tied to mobile phone numbers, had 7 million sign-ups in its first year. Those are reasonable numbers in isolation, but Mexico is still a market where 44% of consumer transactions happen in cash, often through payments at OXXO stores. The infrastructure exists, but active banking penetration and consumer trust in digital methods haven’t reached critical mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Argentina tells a different story because the driver is different. Digital wallets dominate 46% of e-commerce, with Mercado Pago, Ual\u00e1, and Cuenta DNI leading. Transferencias 3.0 created QR interoperability and reached 62.6 million transactions in December 2024. It looks like a success story, but the adoption is driven by inflation, not checkout convenience. Argentine consumers use wallets because they pay interest on balances and allow investment in rate-linked instruments. Argentine consumers protect capital through wallets, and that gets confused with payment preference. If inflation eases, the behavior changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colombia is at the earliest stage. Bre-B was designed to be the Colombian Pix, but the market still relies on credit cards (46% of e-commerce) and PSE, a bank redirect system covering 32% of online payments. Wallets like Nequi and Daviplata are growing, but small business adoption is still limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What connects all of these cases is a conclusion that sounds simple but has enormous operational implications for anyone working in the region: instant payments aren’t a product you install. They’re an ecosystem that depends on a strong regulatory mandate, zero or low cost for the end user, and centralized infrastructure that removes friction from onboarding. Pix had all of that at once. The other systems in the region have had one or two of those conditions at most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For cross-border operators, the practical consequence is that Latin America is not a single payments market. The stack that converts in S\u00e3o Paulo will underperform in Monterrey and fail in Medell\u00edn. Each country requires local integration with the methods consumers actually use, and that varies not just between countries but between cities. At LaFinteca, we built our operation on that premise from the start, precisely because we saw that treating the region as homogeneous is the fastest path to losing conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pix is exceptional. But what makes it exceptional are decisions that other regulators haven’t yet made, whether due to pressure from incumbent banks, political constraints, or because the macro environment simply doesn’t allow it.
