U.S. Sen. Chris Coons was taken to a hospital with minor injuries after a driver suffered a medical incident and crashed into several vehicles in Delaware, including one carrying the senator, according to the lawmaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crash happened earlier Sunday on Savannah Road in Lewes, a coastal city in southern Delaware, after the driver of a pickup truck suffered a medical emergency while heading toward the beach, according to Cape Gazette<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truck struck several vehicles before crashing through the front yard of a home near Savannah Road and Massachusetts Avenue, Lewes Police Chief Tom Spell told the newspaper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photos from the scene showed damaged vehicles outside the home, including a pickup truck near the front of the property and another vehicle pushed into a porch area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coons said he was a passenger in one of the vehicles hit during the crash. He was taken to Beebe Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and later released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m now home and expected to make a full and swift recovery,\u201d Coons said in a statement<\/a>. “I’m feeling relieved and blessed that by all accounts no one was seriously injured during the crash.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spell told Cape Gazette that five or six people were taken to Beebe Hospital after the crash. The pickup driver briefly passed out because of the medical condition and suffered a few broken ribs. Police do not suspect impairment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coons, a Democrat, has represented Delaware in the U.S. Senate since 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
