A JetBlue flight reported hitting a drone while approaching John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, but the plane landed safely and no damage was found, according to aviation officials and the airline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The incident happened around 7:15 a.m. Monday as JetBlue Flight 948 was on final approach to JFK, according to the Federal Aviation Administration<\/a> (FAA). The pilot reported striking a drone at about 3,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flight data from AirNav Radar showed the aircraft was an Airbus A321, a passenger jet that can carry more than 150 people depending on its configuration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The flight had departed Las Vegas late Sunday night and landed at JFK at 8:04 a.m. Monday. Neither the FAA nor JetBlue immediately said how many people were on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In radio traffic with air traffic control, the pilot said the crew had been unable to report the incident to approach controllers before contacting the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe collided with a drone back there in the turn as we\u2019re coming to ASALT,\u201d the pilot said, referring to a waypoint near the airport. \u201cIt hit us right above the cockpit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The tower asked whether the flight needed assistance or planned to continue to the runway. The pilot said no assistance was needed and that the aircraft would continue landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n JetBlue confirmed the flight landed without further incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cCustomers deplaned normally and the plane was removed from service for a post-flight inspection, which found no damage or evidence of a collision,\u201d the airline said in a statement to CNN<\/a>. \u201cSafety is JetBlue\u2019s first priority, and we will assist with any relevant investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n CNN reported that the incident could be the first known collision involving a drone and a passenger plane.
