French prosecutors have opened an investigation into racist comments made by Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla against Kylian Mbapp\u00e9 after France eliminated Paraguay from the World Cup, according to The Guardian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paris prosecutor\u2019s office told The Guardian<\/a> that the inquiry was opened after the French Football Federation (FFF) filed a complaint with France\u2019s national unit for combating online hate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors are considering whether to seek charges for aggravated public insult or incitement to hatred or violence, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amarilla posted the comments after France beat Paraguay in the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one post, she called Mbapp\u00e9 a \u201ccolonized Cameroonian\u201d who was \u201cpretending hard to be French,\u201d describing him as resentful, arrogant, ugly and \u201cscared shitless\u201d during the match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In another post, Amarilla called him a \u201cbrute\u201d who had not learned to write and said that, instead of drinking breast milk as a child, he \u201csucked coconuts.\u201d She also compared people around him to \u201cchimpanzees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French Football Federation (FFF)<\/a> called Amarilla\u2019s remarks \u201ctotally abject and unacceptable\u201d and said it had referred the matter to prosecutors for possible legal action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Federation extends its full support to its captain, its players, and more generally to all victims of such odious remarks,” the FFF said. “These remarks dishonor those who make them and those who spread them. The players of the France National Team represent France; it is our country that is being insulted.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mbapp\u00e9 also responded<\/a> Monday, calling Amarilla \u201ca despicable woman\u201d who was \u201cunworthy\u201d of her office. He said she did not represent Paraguay, whose players had competed with passion and honor during the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country,” Mbappe added. “I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amarilla later issued an open letter to Mbapp\u00e9, saying her posts were written while her \u201cblood was boiling\u201d after Paraguay\u2019s loss and that she later regretted and deleted them. She said she had repeated insults that she herself receives as a brown and Latina woman, but also demanded that Mbapp\u00e9 apologize for calling her despicable and unworthy of her office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a press conference Tuesday, Amarilla defended herself further, saying: \u201cI come from a generation where calling someone \u2018little Black shit\u2019 was common.\u201d She also warned Mbapp\u00e9 not to underestimate her, saying she could file charges against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCareful with Paraguayans,\u201d Amarilla said. \u201cWe put (Ronal)dinho behind bars for corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paraguay\u2019s government rejected<\/a> Amarilla\u2019s posts, saying they were contrary to the values of peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity. The government said her statements were made in her individual capacity as a senator and did not represent Paraguay or its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FIFA Players\u2019 Voice Panel (PVP) said it was \u201cdeeply disturbed\u201d by the racist abuse directed at Mbapp\u00e9. \u201cRacism is an attack on human dignity and has absolutely no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup or in society,\u201d the panel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Nations (UN) Human Rights also condemned<\/a> the comments, calling them \u201cracist and dehumanising.\u201d The office said public officials have a heightened responsibility to stand against racism, discrimination and hate speech.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
