A five-alarm fire spread through three buildings in Queens, NYC, injuring 21 people, including 19 firefighters and emergency medical workers. One occupant was rescued from the second floor in serious condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fire was reported at 9:52 a.m. on Saturday at 132-17 41st Road in Queens’ Flushing neighborhood. Firefighters arrived to find two buildings fully engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to a third.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The buildings were part of a row of five wood-frame structures built in 1930. FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods<\/a> said their wooden walls, floors and roofs allowed the fire to spread rapidly, making it difficult for firefighters to get ahead of the flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After receiving a report of people trapped, firefighters reached the second floor of the main fire building and searched under intense heat and zero visibility. They found an occupant and carried out the rescue without the protection of a hose line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other firefighters helped remove the occupant before the person was treated by emergency medical workers and taken to a hospital in serious condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A second civilian was also hospitalized with injuries described as non-serious. Seventeen firefighters and two emergency medical workers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including heat exhaustion, smoke inhalation, sprains and strains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n More than 250 firefighters and emergency medical workers responded. Crews stopped the flames from spreading to the remaining two buildings in the row, and the fire was brought under control at 1:47 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The three buildings sustained heavy damage, displacing an estimated 10 to 12 people. Some are staying with relatives, while the American Red Cross is helping others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cause of the fire remains under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At 9:52 a.m. Saturday, the FDNY received a report of a fire at 132-17 41st Road in Queens.
