Trump and Kim to meet in Singapore on June 12

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will meet in Singapore on June 12, Trump announced on Thursday, ending weeks of speculation about the date and location.

“The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th,” Trump said in a tweet. “We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!”

Other details about the planned meeting were not immediately released, but Trump hopes to reach a deal in which North Korea agrees to permanent denuclearization.

The meeting follows the historic summit between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April, when the North and South vowed to work together to formally end the Korean War. They also stated their intention to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The campaign of diplomacy has allowed tensions to ease on the Korean Peninsula, but they were high throughout much of 2017, fueled by North Korea’s missile tests and its advancing nuclear weapons program, as well as U.S. military exercises and Trump’s threatening statements.
