Office of Personnel Management

The first lady attended a ceremony this afternoon honoring the new agency director, John Berry, in the department auditorium.

She praised the diversity of the federal workforce and thanked employees for setting a standard of excellence.

She shook hands with the veteran employees on the stage, worked the seated crowd a little and then took off.

During his remarks, Berry recognized in the audience Frank Kameny, who was fired from his federal job in 1957 because of his sexual orientation. The decision was overturned by the Civil Service Commission in 1975.

"In no small part, Dr. Kameny's work, and other leaders like him, made it possible for me to stand here today," said Berry, accompanied at the event by his partner Curtis Yee.
