8 people shot after altercation in Virginia Beach, Virginia

Eight people were shot after an altercation in Virginia Beach, Virginia, according to officials. All of the victims are expected to survive.

The shooting happened at about 9:50 p.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Atlantic Avenue in the city’s Oceanfront area, where officers patrolling the area responded to gunfire and a ShotSpotter activation, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.

Officers arriving at the scene found eight people suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to area hospitals with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to serious.

Homicide detectives said the shooting began after an altercation escalated between two unrelated groups of young adults and juveniles. Authorities determined that at least three suspects exchanged gunfire, and that one of the suspects was also among the eight people who were shot.

Police identified that suspect as 18-year-old Jamaya Williams of Henrico County, Virginia. Williams, who police said was illegally carrying two firearms, was arrested and charged with seven counts of aggravated assault, seven counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, seven counts of reckless handling of a firearm with injury, and three counts of violating a protective order.

Police said 18-year-old Isaiah Charity of Richmond, Virginia is wanted on eight counts of aggravated malicious wounding, eight counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and eight counts of reckless handling of a firearm with injury.

A third suspect was described as a Black male wearing a dark-colored hoodie with possible red lettering on the back.

The other seven victims were identified by police only by age, gender and hometown: a 24-year-old woman from Chesterfield, Virginia; an 18-year-old man and a 20-year-old man, both from Lancaster, Virginia; a 17-year-old girl from Portsmouth, Virginia; a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, both from Richmond, Virginia; and a 20-year-old woman from Snellville, Georgia.

During the investigation, officers also stopped and arrested 21-year-old Jahmari Savage of Chesapeake, Virginia, who was carrying a concealed 9 mm handgun. Police later determined Savage was not believed to be connected to the shooting.
