Honduran lawmaker injured after explosive device thrown at Congress
A Honduran lawmaker was injured after an explosive device was thrown at a group of people outside the Honduran National Congress, according to political leaders and party officials. The incident was captured on multiple videos.
The attack occurred on Thursday in the capital, Tegucigalpa, as lawmakers from the opposition National Party were giving statements to the media outside the Congress building. According to party officials, the device was thrown toward the group, struck Congresswoman Gladis Aurora López in the head, and then detonated.
Tomás Zambrano, head of the National Party’s congressional caucus, said López suffered significant injuries and was treated immediately by medical teams at the scene. Local media reports said she sustained visible injuries to her head and back and was bleeding, but is out of danger.
She was later taken to a private hospital for further treatment. Authorities are still determining whether other people present were injured.
In a statement, the National Party of Honduras condemned what it described as a criminal attack against López. The party said the incident constituted political violence and demanded an immediate and thorough investigation to identify those responsible.
The incident comes amid a severe political crisis in Honduras following the general elections held on November 30. The country remains deeply polarized ahead of a scheduled presidential transition on January 27, after electoral authorities declared National Party candidate Nasry “Tito” Asfura the winner.
Tensions have intensified following allegations of foreign interference and after the Trump administration recently pardoned former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who had been serving a long prison sentence in the United States on drug trafficking charges.
Authorities have not announced arrests related to the attack.
