U.S. launch new large-scale strikes against ISIS targets in Syria
U.S. and partner forces carried out large-scale strikes against multiple Islamic State targets across Syria, as part of an ongoing military operation launched in response to a deadly December ISIS attack that killed U.S. personnel.
U.S. Central Command said the strikes were conducted at about 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday across multiple locations in Syria. The operation is part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, which CENTCOM said was launched on Dec. 19 at the direction of Donald Trump following an ISIS ambush on Dec. 13 in Palmyra.
CENTCOM said the Dec. 13 attack was carried out by an ISIS terrorist and resulted in the deaths of two U.S. service members and one U.S. civilian interpreter.
In a statement, CENTCOM said the latest strikes targeted ISIS positions throughout Syria as part of efforts to prevent future attacks and protect U.S. and partner forces in the region.
“Our message remains strong: if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice,” the command said.
The strikes follow earlier operations conducted after the launch of Operation Hawkeye Strike. In a press release issued Dec. 30, CENTCOM said U.S. and partner forces killed or captured nearly 25 ISIS operatives during missions carried out between Dec. 20 and Dec. 29.
Those missions followed a large-scale strike on Dec. 19 in which U.S. and Jordanian forces struck more than 70 ISIS targets using over 100 precision munitions.
