Suspect opens fire on Indianapolis officers as they assist shooting victim
A suspect was critically injured after opening fire on police officers who were responding to a shooting in Indianapolis, according to local officials. A victim with a graze wound to the neck was also hospitalized.
The incident began at about 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of Sumner Avenue, where Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to investigate a shooting. When officers arrived, they found a man with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.
As officers were trying to help the victim, the suspect fired at them from an upstairs window of a nearby home, according to police. Officers took cover and at least one officer returned fire.
As more officers arrived, police learned a child could be inside the house and in danger. Officers entered the home to look for anyone at risk and to find the suspect.
Police said officers escorted two adults and two children from the home, all of them unharmed. Officers then found the suspect upstairs with apparent gunshot wounds.
The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. The original shooting victim was also taken to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Investigators said they are not looking for any other suspects and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community. A firearm was recovered from the second floor of the home.
Police have not released the identity of the suspect or the victim, and no motive has been announced.
The officer who fired was wearing a body camera that was activated, according to police. The officer has been placed on administrative leave while internal affairs conducts a separate investigation.
