Man shot by Secret Service after opening fire near White House, bystander also hit

At least two people have been shot near the White House after Secret Service officers opened fire, including a possible suspect and a likely bystander, according to preliminary information. Details about the circumstances were not immediately clear.

The incident happened at around 6 p.m. on Sunday near the White House. NewsNation correspondent Kellie Meyer, citing colleagues at the scene, said gunshots were heard outside the complex and that members of the press were told to shelter in place.

“It was a lot of gunshots,” one colleague told Meyer. “We are all safe inside.”

“We are aware of reports of shots fired near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW and are working to corroborate the information with personnel on the ground,” the U.S. Secret Service said in a statement. “Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”

PBS correspondent Liz Landers, citing preliminary information, reported that at least two people were shot, including a possible suspect and a “likely” bystander.

ABC News correspondent Selina Wang was recording from the White House North Lawn when a series of loud bangs could be heard, causing her and a camera operator to drop to the ground, according to footage she posted.

Footage from the area showed officers responding near the scene. Officials had not released additional details, and the exact location of the possible gunfire was not immediately known.
