1 dead, 4 wounded in Kansas City-area spree shooting

One person was killed and four others were wounded in a series of shootings along highways and streets in the Kansas City area, leading to an overnight standoff at a home in nearby Independence, according to police and local media.

The shootings happened within about 30 minutes Tuesday evening along a roughly five-mile stretch that began near downtown Kansas City, KCTV reported, citing officials. Victims were found near I-670 and Wyoming Street, I-70 and Paseo Boulevard, I-70 and Prospect Avenue, and Truman Road and Hardesty Avenue.

In each case, victims told police they were driving eastbound when someone fired one or more shots into their vehicles, according to KCTV. One vehicle was reported to have been traveling eastbound from Kansas.

Four people were taken to a hospital, including three adults and a teenager. The teenager was listed in stable condition, while two of the adults were expected to recover. Another adult had life-threatening injuries.

Police also believe the same suspect was involved in a deadly shooting and crash near Truman Road and Bennington Avenue at about 6:30 p.m., Kansas City police Capt. Jake Becchina told The Kansas City Star.

The investigation led police to a home in Independence, near 24 Highway and Brookside Avenue, where authorities believed the suspect had been cornered. The standoff continued overnight and stretched into Wednesday, with no update on the suspect’s condition.

The house caught fire at about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday before fire crews responded and put out the flames, according to KCTV.

Five dogs that lived at the home died during the incident, Independence police told The Kansas City Star. Police said they believe the dogs died of smoke inhalation.

The shootings happened on the same day Kansas City hosted a World Cup match between Argentina and Algeria, though officials have not indicated any connection between the incidents and the tournament.

The investigation remains ongoing.
