One teen was killed and five others, including two girls, were injured when gunmen opened fire toward an apartment complex in San Antonio, according to police. One of the people taken to a hospital was identified by police as a suspect.

The shooting was reported at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Lamar Street, near North Mittman Street on the city’s East Side, as 4th of July celebrations were taking place across the city, according to San Antonio police.

In preliminary information, police said three suspects were walking near the area when they fired toward the apartment complex. There may have been an exchange of gunfire before officers arrived.

When officers reached the scene, they found multiple people with gunshot wounds outside the complex. Investigators were told the gunfire struck people both inside and outside the building.

A teen was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Five others were also taken to hospitals in critical but stable condition, including two girls, ages 5 and 12, a 41-year-old woman, a 22-year-old man and one other person whose age was not immediately released.

Police initially said one of the people taken to a hospital was a suspect. Another suspect was taken into custody.

Several people were detained for questioning, according to a preliminary police report. It was not immediately clear whether any charges had been filed.

Police said the information was preliminary and could change as the investigation continues.
