Lawyer sentenced to prison for lying to special counsel investigators
Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan has been sentenced to a month in U.S. prison for lying to federal agents who are part of the special counsel’s investigation, prosecutors say.
Van der Zwaan, who lives in London, was sentenced to 30 days in prison after pleading guilty to lying to investigators about his contact with former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates. He was also ordered to pay $20,000 in fines.
The case resulted from the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible links to Trump’s presidential campaign.
The charges against Van der Zwaan and Gates are not related to Trump’s campaign. Van der Zwaan is the first person to be convicted and sentenced as a result of the special counsel’s investigation.
