2 dead in Florida shooting spree
A man has gone on a shooting spree in northwest Florida, killing one person and injuring another at two separate scenes, local officials say. He was later found dead at his apartment in Panama City.
The incident began at about 9 a.m. ET on Tuesday when officers were called to a shooting at a home on White Heron Drive in Santa Rosa Beach, a community in northwest Florida, about 29 miles (46 kilometers) northwest of Panama City.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office said 30-year-old Clinton Street was killed in the shooting, suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Kevin Holroyd, a 49-year-old man from Panama City, was identified as the suspect.
Hours later, shots were fired at Holroyd’s apartment complex in Panama City. Officers who arrived at the scene were immediately fired upon, according to Ruth Corley, a spokeswoman for the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
Witnesses reported hearing hundreds of gunshots being fired in rapid succession, forcing first responders to take cover. One woman was struck by a bullet while leaving the apartment complex, causing minor injuries.
Holroyd was found dead in his apartment after an hours-long standoff, but there was no immediate word on how he died. The floor of the apartment was doused in gasoline, and authorities said Holroyd may have tried to use a flare to set it on fire.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Office described Tuesday’s incident as a “domestic situation.” Local TV channels reported that Street was engaged to Holroyd’s ex-wife, and Holroyd himself was in the process of being evicted from his home.
Other details were not immediately available.
