9 people shot at Rochester Hills, Michigan splash pad
Nine people were injured, including several children, when a man ‘randomly’ opened fire at a splash pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan, according to local officials. The suspect fled the scene and later took his own life at a nearby home.
The incident began at around 5:11 p.m. on Saturday when officers were called for an “active shooter” at the city-run Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad on E Auburn Road, close to Spencer Park, in Rochester Hills.
“It appears the individual pulled up, exited a vehicle, approached the splash pad, opened fire, reloaded, opened fire, reloaded, and left,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. “So it appears very random. No connectivity to the victims.”
Bouchard said the gunman fired more than 30 shots, striking at least 9 victims, including 8-year-old and 4-year-old siblings, as well as their mother. The 8-year-old boy was reportedly in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
A 9mm semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene, Bouchard said.
The suspect, a 42-year-old white male, fled the scene and was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Shelby Township. He was known to have mental health issues, lived with his mom and had no criminal history, the sheriff said.
Rochester Hills is about 22 miles north of Detroit.
