At least 10 people have been injured, most of them with critical injuries, after a stabbing attack on board a passenger train in the Huntingdon area of England, according to witnesses and local officials. Two people have been arrested.

The incident happened at around 7:39 p.m. on Saturday when armed police were called to reports that multiple people had been stabbed on board a train which was traveling from Doncaster to London’s King’s Cross.

The train made an emergency stop at Huntingdon station, where armed police boarded the train and arrested two people.

“Ten people have been taken to hospital with nine believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries. One is being treated for non life-threatening injuries. There have been no fatalities,” British Transport Police said in a statement on early Sunday.

Police said a major incident had been declared and Counter Terrorism Policing is supporting the investigation, although information about the circumstances and motivation of the attack was not immediately released.

Footage from witnesses showed a large number of police vehicles and ambulances in the area.

“This is a shocking incident and first and foremost my thoughts are with those who have been injured this evening and their families,” Police Chief Superintendent Chris Casey said. “We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further.”

Casey added: “At this early stage it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “The appalling incident on a train near Huntingdon is deeply concerning. My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response. Anyone in the area should follow the advice of the police.”

Huntingdon is a town about 16 miles northwest of Cambridge or 56 miles north of central London.
