2 killed, 6 injured in shooting outside Mormon church in Salt Lake City
At least two people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting at a LDS church parking lot in Salt Lake City, Utah, according to police. The shooting occurred during a funeral and followed a dispute.
Salt Lake City police responded to reports of gunfire at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at around 7:36 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police spokesperson Glen Mills. An altercation broke out during the funeral in the chapel’s parking lot.
“We know there are at least eight victims,” Mills said. “Two of them have died, three of them are in critical condition, and three others are in unknown condition.”
Mills said some of the victims were taken to hospitals by private vehicles before officers arrived. Authorities have not released the victims’ ages.
Police said the suspects fled the scene, and a manhunt has been launched. The suspects’ vehicle was last seen heading north on Redwood Road. Mills said investigators are examining whether the shooting may be gang-related.
The church is located near the area of 650 North Redwood Road, close to Salt Lake City International Airport.
