2 hospitalized after shooting involving CBP agents in Portland

Two people were hospitalized after a shooting involving federal agents during a vehicle stop in Portland, Oregon, according to the Portland Police Bureau and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The incident occurred at about 2:19 p.m. local time on Thursday, when U.S. Border Patrol agents were conducting what DHS described as a targeted vehicle stop in Portland.

DHS claimed the passenger of the vehicle was a Venezuelan national unlawfully present in the United States who is affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and was involved in a recent shooting in the city.

When agents identified themselves, the driver allegedly used the vehicle as a weapon and attempted to run over the agents. An agent then fired a defensive shot, fearing for his life, DHS said.

The driver fled the scene with the passenger still inside the vehicle.

Portland police said they were dispatched at 2:18 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 10200 block of Southeast Main Street and later received information that a man was calling for help near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside Street. Officers responding to that location found a man and a woman with apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators later determined that the two injured individuals were wounded during the agent-involved shooting. Police said officers applied a tourniquet and requested emergency medical assistance. Both victims were transported to a hospital, and their conditions were not immediately released.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

The incident came a day after a fatal shooting involving federal agents in Minneapolis, in which 37-year-old Renee Good, a U.S. citizen, was killed during an encounter with ICE agents.
