2 Indianapolis police officers shot during disturbance call

Two Indianapolis police officers were shot after responding to a disturbance on the city’s east side, according to police. The suspect was shot by officers and is in critical condition.

The incident began at about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were called to a disturbance in the 8000 block of East 37th Street, according to IMPD.

When officers arrived, they encountered a man and a woman. Police said the man opened fire at the officers, striking two of them.

At least one officer returned fire with their service weapon, striking the suspect.

The two officers were taken to an area hospital in stable condition. The suspect was also taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

“I’m asking for your thoughts and prayers,” IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said during a briefing. “This was a very tragic incident for this community and for the city of Indianapolis, and it should not have happened in our community.”

A large multi-agency response could be seen at the scene, including officers from IMPD and the Lawrence Police Department, as well as troopers from the Indiana State Police.
