2 helicopters collide midair near Hammonton, New Jersey; 1 killed
One person was killed and another was critically injured after two helicopters collided midair near a municipal airport in southern New Jersey, according to officials.
The collision occurred around 11:25 a.m. on Sunday near Hammonton Municipal Airport, in the area of Basin Road and WHP, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA said an Enstrom F-28A helicopter and an Enstrom 280C helicopter were involved, and that only the pilots were on board each aircraft.
Police told WPVI that one person died and another was taken to a hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries.
The Hammonton Fire Department said it responded to an aviation-related incident in the area along with multiple fire, police and emergency medical agencies. Officials asked the public to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to operate safely.
Hammonton is located in Atlantic County in southern New Jersey, roughly 30 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Hammonton Municipal Airport serves small aircraft and is situated near residential and rural areas outside the town center.
The FAA said the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation and provide further updates. The fire department said the nature of the incident will require extensive investigation at both the state and federal levels.
