FBI offers $50,000 reward for information on Brown University shooting suspect
Federal authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for information after investigators released new images of a suspect sought in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, according to the FBI and local police.
Providence Police Chief Oscar L. Perez Jr. said during a press briefing on Monday that investigators have developed a new lead and are asking for the public’s help to identify an individual seen in surveillance videos.
Perez said the images and video were captured around 2 p.m. on Saturday near Hope Street and the intersections of Benevolent and Manning streets, roughly two hours before the shooting. He said investigators believe the individual shown is the same person seen in previously released footage and described the material as showing the person walking on a sidewalk prior to the attack.
Ted Dock, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Field Office, said the bureau is now offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the person responsible. Dock said investigators believe the suspect is armed and dangerous.
The mass shooting occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday inside the Barus & Holley Engineering Building on the Brown University campus. Authorities said two students were killed and nine other people were wounded.
The victims who were killed were identified as Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, according to officials. All nine injured victims were transported to the university-affiliated Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.
Police said a man in his 20s who was detained as a person of interest on Sunday was released late Sunday night after investigators determined the evidence pointed “in a different direction” and that there was “no basis to consider him a person of interest.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to the images or video to contact law enforcement.
