1 killed, 11 injured in head-on crash involving school bus in Illinois
One person was killed and 11 others were injured in a head-on crash involving a school bus transporting students in Manhattan, Illinois, according to officials. Authorities said no major injuries were reported among the children on the bus.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:25 a.m. on Thursday near the intersection of Manhattan Monee Road and Kankakee Road, when a school bus carrying students from Manhattan School District collided with a passenger vehicle, the Manhattan Fire Protection District said.
Fire officials said crews found a school bus carrying 10 students and one driver at the scene. All students were evaluated on site before being transported to area hospitals along with the bus driver as a precaution.
Illinois State Police said the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Local media reports said the crash was a head-on collision.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Snow and icy conditions were visible on the roadway at the scene.
Manhattan is a town located about 40 miles southwest of Chicago, near the border of Will County and Kankakee County.
