Texas deputy, state trooper shot multiple times while serving warrants
A sheriff’s deputy and a state trooper were shot multiple times while serving felony warrants at a home in Wood County in East Texas, and the suspect later died after an hours-long standoff, according to officials. Both officers are in critical but stable condition and are expected to recover.
The shooting occurred Saturday near the intersection of Farm-to-Market Road 515 and Farm-to-Market Road 2966 in Wood County, which is located about 100 miles east of Dallas.
According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety personnel were attempting to serve six felony warrants when the suspect opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon.
Authorities said both a Wood County deputy and a DPS trooper were struck multiple times. The suspect then barricaded himself inside the residence.
After attempts to persuade the suspect to surrender, including negotiations and the use of tear gas, officers entered the home. The suspect again fired at law enforcement, and officers returned fire, the sheriff’s office said.
The suspect was transported to a hospital in Quitman, where he later died. The injured deputy and trooper were taken to a hospital in Tyler for treatment. Both are expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect had been wanted on charges including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, theft of a firearm, evading arrest with a vehicle, and two separate warrants for possession of a controlled substance.
Authorities have not released the names of the injured officers or the suspect. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
