Intoxicated man drives onto airfield at Florida airport; tries to enter planes
An intoxicated driver breached the airfield at Daytona Beach International Airport in Florida and tried to get into multiple airplanes before being taken into custody, according to officials.
The incident happened at about 4:23 p.m. Wednesday, when a vehicle drove through a gate at the airport’s international terminal and continued onto the airfield, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said the driver, an adult man whose identity has not been released, first approached an occupied airplane that was running and tried to get inside, but was unable to enter because the aircraft was locked.
He then went to two other unoccupied airplanes and briefly got into them before airport operations staff and security from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University stopped him.
The suspect was taken into custody. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said multiple charges were pending.
The sheriff’s office said its Domestic Security Unit responded to the scene along with the FBI. Airport operations continued without disruption during the investigation.
