Officer, suspect injured in police shooting near Ultra Music Festival in Miami
A Miami police officer and a suspect were injured in an officer-involved shooting near Bayfront Park in downtown Miami, where Ultra Music Festival is being held this weekend, according to officials.
The shooting happened at about 7 a.m. Saturday after officers responded to a report of a man acting erratically at the Yve Hotel on Second Street, Miami Police Chief Manny Morales said. The hotel is about a block from Bayfront Park.
WPLG, citing witnesses, reported that the man appeared to be in his early 20s, removed his shirt at one point and began yelling.
Officers tried to de-escalate the situation and used a Taser, but it was ineffective. An officer then fired, striking the man.
Police said both the suspect and an officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Officials have not said how the officer was hurt.
Morales said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident. Police did not immediately release the suspect’s identity.
Bayfront Park is hosting Ultra this weekend, one of the largest electronic music festivals in the United States and an event that draws large crowds to downtown Miami each year.
Festival programming continued as scheduled later Saturday, with no postponement or canceled performances announced.
