Family finds human skull during Easter egg hunt at California park
A family taking part in an Easter egg hunt found a human skull at a park in Southern California, according to officials and local media reports.
The discovery was made at about 5 p.m. on Sunday at DeForest Park in Long Beach, part of the Los Angeles area. A family came across the remains while searching for Easter eggs.
The Long Beach Police Department said the incident led to a response by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, which is handling the recovery and examination of the remains.
Police said no other remains were found with the skull, but members of the medical examiner’s Special Operations Response Team were working at the park to recover any additional remains.
Any remains recovered will be taken to the Forensic Science Center for examination to determine whether they are human, officials said.
Authorities said details including the person’s age, gender and cause of death, if those can be determined, will come from the medical examiner. The investigation is ongoing.
